In every day discussion, one often hears people railing against wind turbines but nuclear power stations are hardly ever mentioned. Every one here is in favour of solar - more sun and the French have the sense to nearly always place the arrays on big roofs and not on the ground - many supermarket car parks have electric roofs to shade the cars and generate cheap power. I personally think that NP is here to stay and will forever form a significant component of 'base-power' (power for when the wind don't blow and sun is behind the clouds). What is remarkable is that new technology for a new generation of 'safe' NP stations has been starved of investment. However, there is one ray of development hope - http://www.the-weinberg-foundation.org/2013/07/23/bill-gates-nuclear-company-explores-molten-salt-reactors-thorium/. Take a look.
